Lifting up didn't work for me either. It might have something to do with the user's weight, because my husband, who weighs 70 pounds more than me, can just do a knee up, I have to do the knee up and then make a stomping motion downward (in the air, not touching the board) to get it to register.
But kicking is more fun and definitely more exercise. I've quit trying to find shortcuts and cheats on Fit. I got it to exercise and it kind of defeats my purpose to try to find the easiest way to do everything. My EA Sports Active trainer reminds me often that I will only get out of my exercise what I put into it.
Oh yeah, I'd rather kick too! I prefer the games that are harder workouts, because my goal is to burn calories, having fun is just a perk! I've enjoyed the whole system more since I bought a heart rate monitor. I used to get annoyed when a game said I didn't do something, but I did do it and it hadn't registered. Now that I use a HRM, the points and calorie burn listed in the game don't matter as much, because I know what the real number is!

I agree Mokey but if everytime I try a new cheat I bike 10 or 11 km and work up a sweat it still works for me. In the flag runs where time doesn't count I just use it to pass time and take a break without just sitting there.

I think the cycling may be the exception to the rule. You guys are so into it that you probably do hours every day trying to find new things. As long as you're doing the 30 minute free ride it's 30 minutes no matter how you "cheat" on it.
It isn't "do a kick" or "bounce a little so you go slower".
Rather, it is, "Make sure your weight is properly forward before you start to put your green foot back down." The point is that as far as I can see, the machine registers you as being on time or late or early at some point as your weight shifts towards the rear. That's why you can have what you think is a perfect delay at the top with the green foot in the air, but still get a crammed-together "perfect, OK" sequence - you haven't managed to get your weight far enough forward that it takes long enough to bring it back to the cut-off line.
I used to have the same problem until I realised that its the foot on the board, not the one kicking, that makes it happen. What you gotta do is put all your weight on the upper part of the foot on the board AS you kick out with the green foot. So basically lean a bit forward to the beat of the music as you kick the other foot and you get perfects
