I'm a recent convert to the Wii Fit (had it two days) and loving it. The Yoga is great and I like the balancing however when it comes to Aerobics and specifically the Step I am useless!
I took a few attempts to get into the idea of the steps and I can get almost no misses, however I can not get the rhythm so I am either too early or too late with the steps which results in an "Ok" for each step and very few "Perfects"
I was terrible at step when I first tried it, and gave up after a while. But I came back to it recently and managed to get the hang of it. Now it's my warm-up exercise.
I think the key is just perseverance. It takes a while to get used to but you'll probably get there in the end. Although I've never bothered with the clapping in the next level of step, mainly because I feel like a right wally doing it

I found it easier to get the right rhythm by watching the other Mii's feet rather than trying to follow the "ladder" thing. The "perfect" seems to come from landing at the exact right moment in the Wii's opinion (which rarely is the same as mine!). Hope this helps. It's a really fun one.

I find the steps plus easier to do than the basic one. It always says I'm not going fast enough though ! I'm sure I am. I just think that a couple of misses makes this happen ! I don't clap either, I'd lose track of what I did with my feet, doesn't taek much to confuse me ! I think it's just a case of practice, once you get to be familiar with the routine you'll fall in step with the mii's.
I found my perfect steps went up when I moved my arms as well - I think my upper body may have more sense of rhythm than my lower?

If you listen, there's a rhythm to the music--moving your arms helps to get you into that rhythm. Concentrate on the rhythm you hear, and your feet should obey
I had the same problem when I first tried it. I gave up on it for a while and did other exercises instead. After about a month I came back to it and have had much improved success. One thing that helped me was to really concentrate on the music and make sure I was stepping in time with it. Another thing I noticed is that it actually registers when you step off to the side on the floor. So make sure that all of your steps are in time with the beat, whether you are stepping on the board or the floor. One of the things I don't like about it is that the bell that rings to register your step is much louder than the music. This makes it very distracting, and when you are not in time it can really throw you off. I had to learn to ignore that and focus on the music. It would be nice if there was a setting to change the bell volume.

Hi, I also found that if you really exaggerate the step, then it registers well. Eg lift your foot quite high and step quite 'purposefully' onto the board.Oh and make sure you put your foot in the middle of each rectangle/half of the board as it doesn't like it if you are too close to the edges. You have to keep in time too, often you go too fast so just check that you are not going too quick. It is great once you get into it - I really like step, just wish there were more routines...
