Congratulations! Boss should be tough. You'll get it. Just think through the strategy before you proceed. Most boss fights, in my experience, require a different strategy from normal fights.
I haven't had much time to play as of yet. Yesterday, I was too busy. Today, though, I have been working on my double-B jump. It's getting better. I'm also improving my targetting.
Is the first boss fight on or off the ship, out of curiosity?

No still on, you end up back in the docking bay & WHEN you win! then you can get back to your ship & off you can fly.... The strategy appears to be to dodge out of his line of fire yet still manage to hit him where it hurts...looks like this may take some time
OK, I'm a sucker for an interesting-sounding game. So I bought this one as well. Yes, I like. Some time spent in my less-old days playing shooters like Doom, Quake III and more recently Tribes: Ascend (OK, I play these games badly, but never mind that) has given me an appreciation of methods of dodge-and-shoot, and at least the double-B jump doesn't involve firing a rocket at my feet...
I haven't yet played long enough to have reached the first boss fight, but I escaped from the garbage room, and opened the blast doors...

Hi Cynique,
Glad you like smile Youv'e got the jump on me (no pun intended ) as I am a complete and utter novice, so I'm surprised Iv'e made it this far in the game & from some clips watched, looks like it gets even better further on, only wish I had an inkling of how to dodge & shoot, I just move around erratically & more times then not just end up biting the dust so to speak I think it will be a miracle if I ever win the battle with the Boss!!!!!!!!!!!

I've finished the boss, and I've made it on board my ship. I died once while learning what's going on.
SPOILER FOLLOWS.
The boss has two fighting modes, called normal and berzerk.
In normal mode, he has a red glowing ball under each armpit. He attacks by spraying blue stuff forward. The blue stuff damages you continuously but slowly. If left alone enough he will periodically fire a blue laser and sweep it across you. This delivers a single heavy blow, but is survivable. You must shoot the red balls to leave normal mode into berzerk mode.
During the transition, he creates three or four large black-and-purple floating spheres above your head height that come toward you. These hurt you if they touch you, but can - I suspect "must" is the right word here - be shot to send them back to the boss and bring him fully to berzerk mode.
In berzerk mode, he lays down all-round fire and spits stronger versions of the blue stuff. If you get him into this mode, but don't finish him off, he will eventually calm down and regain the two red glowing balls, at which point he switches back to normal mode.
Things to note: * The rocket launcher is largely ineffective in this fight, partly because it's hard to target well, and partly because you can only have five missiles and you've used one in the other room. (It's hard to target because the travel time of the rockets means the boss will often be able to cover up a vulnerable point before the rocket gets there.) * The charged-up shot mode (hold A then release when charged) is also of limited effectiveness for similar reasons. * Shooting using the normal tap-A attack is more effective because you can keep up a high rate of fire so as to more easily get a shot into a vulnerable point. * Shooting parts of the boss that don't glow (including his back) doesn't help, and shots will just bounce off. * Shooting from the side in normal mode, while safe (his attacks are primarily forward), is ineffective because the interesting targets are shielded by his body and his arm that's nearest to you. * Various things, including killing the red glowing balls, will drop purple energy recharge balls onto the ground. These are obviously not the purple/black spheres that you must return to the boss between normal and berzerk modes. * The ball mode ('C' button) is useful as a means of getting out of the line of fire, as Samus is faster and better protected when in the ball mode than when standing upright, but she cannot fight in this mode. * Pressing 'B' to jump with the Nunchuk stick deflected to the side is your primary fast dodge, and works well for evading the laser attack. * Fighting closer in helps by making the energy balls easier to grab, and by making the targets easier to hit because they are larger. The downside is that dodging is harder because you have less time to react. * I haven't really mastered using Z to lock onto a target. Simply following the red/green switching of the aiming mark is essential.
Given all that, it becomes clear what "dodge-and-shoot" means for this boss. Dodge using normal movement, the ball, and the stick-jump. And shoot using the simple shot.

Hi Lajoggeuse & Cynique
Not fed up yet, but slowly getting there Iv'e tried defeating the, BOSS in basic , standard & advanced mode, have found can get further along (last longer) in standard mode, have managed to shoot out red target zones on boss twice, but cannot shoot back all the purple orbs (which help destroy him) so back come the red zones & I die
I really need to improve my technigue, but have managed to work out that circling round him! keeps me alive longer. now I just have to use the B jump button less (as and when needed) as at mo I tend to jump around almost constantly to avoid the blue beam & this really messes with my aim . also I need some target practice as when I get excited by shooting out his red orbs, I get quite wobbly
Hopefully I will master it soon
Kind Regards Auldnewbie
Whoohoo!!!!!Just went in to try again, after 3rd time defeated BOSSS (and boy doesn't he get angry )on my way to Norian

Congratulations!!!! I can't put into words how happy I am for you!
I knew you could do it. It just took a bit of time for you to master the skills needed and to get used to the strategy, that's all.
You're doing tremendously well, you know. You've gone from playing casual games to playing one of the more hardcore Wii games around and you're getting there. You've defeated a boss and you'll defeat other bosses.
Don't worry about dying a few times or so when fighting bosses. Boss fights are - or should be - mini-puzzles. That's what I mean by strategy. There's always a trick or two with them that requires that you use your powers of observation to figure out their vulnerabilites. It's like the old tale of the invulnerable giant. Once the hero of the piece finds out that the giant's heart is kept in a jar, he gets hold of said jar and kills the giant. With a boss, you're always looking for where the heart is kept, metaphorically speaking.
Anyway, congratulations again! You deserve a party for your progress!

Thanks Lajoggeuse, ( hope this works 3rd time of writing this)
I am so so chuffed with my efforts.... not sure of Partytime, but must admit did a triumpthant little jig and it has had the desired effect no thought of food..... How far along are you Lajoggeuse? I bet you and Cynique are way ahead Well I'm on Norion, in Morph mode going through a maze of shafts, but stuck at moment trying to do a very small jump onto a very small ledge....but I will prevail....

Actually, I've not had a chance to play since I killed the berzerker boss. I got on the ship and flew down to the planet and spoke to the guy to get the next job, but haven't had a chance to do any more than that.
But congratulations all the same! Keep up the good work, and not too many spoilers!

Ah, no, I'm not further ahead of you. I've been very busy with work and such like as of late and haven't been able to play. I'll have more time this weekend, though, and will see how far I can get.
I'm sure you'll get the jump. I've noticed that some jumps require careful positioning before making them. It just takes some experimentation. Anyway, congratulations again for doing so well. I'll let you know where I get to when I get there.
