They really don't have options like that for copyright reasons. They want to make sure you're using the games with just one wii at a time.
I have game CD's in my studio right now that are 20 years old and still completely playable. If you always return your CD to the case after you're done playing there's no reason that the disk won't live well beyond the working life of your wii console. If you're like my roommate and you have a hard time getting the disks back in their cases I'd recommend getting one of those CD cary cases so you can just tuck them and forget about them.
But as long as you're storing the disks in a protective case they should last for years.

The purpose of the disk is to backup your saved games and downloaded games. Depending on your game preferences you might need to clear out space on your hard drive for new content and obviously you don't want to lose those 30 levels of Raving Rabbids you worked so hard to get though (so hard, so very very hard, )
It's also how you get your digital photos and videos onto the photo channel.
