The latest sales charts are in a VGChartz and they have just gone stratospheric in the lead-in to Christmas.
All three consoles have seen strong growth, with even the PS3 starting to see some life as it edges towards 400,000 units per week. However the clear winner is still the Wii, which has smashed the 1 million units per week barrier and sold 1.3million in the last week of November, outselling the other two combined by a margin of 163,480 units.
Those numbers for sales in the last week of November:
PS3 - 367,302
XBox 360 - 788,311
Wii - 1,319,093
Of course that doesn't mean there are not people suggesting that Nintendo should restrict supply. Yes, because restricting the supply of the Wii will make more people buy them, ahem. I think someone has been drinking too much of the marketing theory Kool-Aid. Nintendo is making a healthy profit from every unit it sells, and appears to need no help in generating demand.
The Wii is practically selling itself, or rather Wii owners are selling the Wii. The larger the Wii install base is, the more people get to see one in action, the more people buy it. The Wii is the biggest Tupperware party in history. Being a social gaming system, it is the kind of thing that gets used at parties and with friends, and if those friends don't have one, then they soon will after they have had a play. An increased install base means more people get to play it at parties and family get-togethers, which means more people want one.
I'm going to stick my neck out and say that the Wii has another year of strong sales before it starts to hit the market saturation point.
