I recently came across an article about how exercise not only increases the number of mitochondria in muscles but it also increases the number of mitochondria in the brain.
Mitochondria, put simply, are the powerhouses of cells. When the number of mitochondria increases in the brain, it makes it more resistant to fatigue. This could mean that it helps to increase the ability of the brain to concentrate and that it also helps to ward off some of the things that happen when a brain ages.
This makes a certain amount of sense. I recall hearing that top chess players keep themselves in good shape because it helps them to play chess better. The mind and the body are more linked than we appreciate.
