For some years I was a regular yoga practitioner, with an excellent teacher, but haven't done much for some time. So having Yoga in Wii Fit was a real boon. In fact, the Wii Fit balance board is perfect for Yoga. The essence of yoga is balance.

So, after a couple of months of using Wii Fit yoga, I've put together this short guide of how to get the most out of it.

Don't push yourself too far
Every year, thousands of people end up in casualty as the result of overdoing yoga. When bending or stretching, don't try to go further than you feel comfortable. If you are having problems breathing, or start to shake, you should ease off a bit.

Simplify the pose if you are having difficulties
Some of the poses, such as the tree, have multiple stages. If you have difficulty doing the full pose, simplify it a bit. For example, in the tree, if you have problems balancing in the full pose, keep your hands together against your chest. Likewise, if you are having problems doing the triangle, a particularly strong pose, you can simply avoid the twist element, look down at the floor, or place your hand on the floor to make yourself more stable.

Stand properly
You are probably thinking, "well duh", but how you stand while doing yoga can make a big difference.

Try to keep you feet flat on the floor or balance board. It is very easy to find yourself curling your toes, trying to "grip" the floor. Try to keep your feet relaxed.

In straight-leg balance poses, such as the tree, keep your leg straight and your leg muscles tensioned. You should feel your knee-cap lift. Extend your spine and keep you back straight and your bum tucked in. Try to imagine you are being pulled up through the top of your head.

Get yourself a non-slip cover or mat
A full blown yoga mat is probably overkill, but a non-slip balance board cover will help a lot. You won't have to worry about slipping on the board and can concentrate on your balance instead.

Breath
Sounds easy, doesn't it? But once you are in some of the stronger poses, such as the triangle, can restrict your breathing. There is a reason that the first pose in Wii Fit is the simple standing pose with breathing. Breathing is central to yoga. Try to keep your rhythm during each pose, and breath deeply.

And finally...

Smile! :)
This was probably the best piece of advice my yoga instructor ever gave. If you can't smile, then you are too tense. Relax and smile while you are doing any of the poses.

Your general advice makes a lot of sense. I particularly agree to modify poses if you can't manage. I can't attempt the Tree without holding on to something but I hope my balance will eventually improve enough to let go.

Another thing I'd say is that if one of the poses doesn't work for you first time, go back to it another day. I attempted the 'downward-facing-dog' the week before last, the trainer kept saying over and over again, that I was putting too much weight on my arms, I got very annoyed and stopped halfway through, which got another cheeky comment from the trainer !!, I decided never to do it again !
However, I tried again today and scored 80 points, so I don't know where I went wrong first time, but I'm glad I did go back.

I also agree you should never push too far, for example don't try to touch your toes if you know you can't ! I really enjoyed the Yoga today and felt quite energised afterwards !

Excellent :)

I love doing yoga, and the routine system makes it so much more useful in Wii Fit Plus than it was in Wii Fit.

If I get time tonight, I will write up the various intermediate poses you can do for the Tree. Doing part of a pose will still give you benefits and help build the little stabilizing muscles that you use to balance. So doing "The Shrub" :) will help build up those that you use for the Tree.

These are the excellent tips, thank you are sharing for.
As we all know yoga is best thing to keep our mind and body healthy. But there are certain issues with it, which is need to keep in mind. There are some complications with it, we just need to simplify. As it was also written in the article. But overall yoga is the best thing which can take care of health.
