What is going on with my wii fit? Well actually with my weight. Before I start I guess I should say Hello! I bought my wii fit with the money I saved when I stopped smoking. I didn't want to start gaining a lot of weight with the quitting and didn't seem to be. When I had quit I got a meter that tracks how much money I've saved and how long I had quit. At 45 days I had saved enough to buy the wii and wii fit. It was in a bundle pack on sale and I only had to add 20 quid in.
So on September 1st, 2009 I stepped on the wii fit. I have never felt so insulted so quickly! Not that I was surprised but well you know.
Here is where I am having trouble. I don't understand what is going on. The first day I registered in at an unhealthy 14st. 4lbs. UGH. I am only 5'4". So I start out doing 30 min. a day. I quickly move up to doing 2 30min sessions, one in the morning one in the afternoon. I work from home so this is possible. I then get a bad cold, really bad and I can barely manage to do the body test never the less the workouts. So after 5 days I am finally back on and I am down to 14st. 2lbs. In the next 4 days I get down to 13st. 12lbs. that's 7 lbs in a week and a half. Woohoo.
And then all of a sudden I start gaining weight, just a pound here and there, usually up 3 lbs down 2 lbs, up 3lbs down 2lbs.
So do you see where this trend is going? Not in the direction I had hoped. I work out now for 1 hour in the morning, and 30 min. in the afternoon. In the morning I do a 10 min. warm up from a DVD I like, then 10-15 min of yoga and the rest of the time, aerobics. Hula Hooping, boxing, jogging, step, you name it. In the afternoons I do muscle for 20 min. and then finish with balance.
I've changed my eating habits.
So today after 28 days I have only lost 2lbs. I've missed 12 days of working out, 5 because I was sick, the others are the 4 Sundays where I take a break and missed days here and there. I am so gutted over this, especially after reading about others progress. What is going on, what am I doing wrong? I figure at the rate I am going in 2 weeks I will actually weigh more than when I started!
It's not muscle weight, my clothes are not fitting any differently and in order to gain that much muscle I would have a flat tummy and I certainly don't. Please someone HELP. Has anyone experienced this problem. I don't want to give up, but if I am just going to get fatter, I would rather do it eating ice cream and being a couch potato.
Every day your body ingests plenty of water and disposes of even more. Most of the changes in weight you see from day to day on a scale reflect nothing more than how much water is in the rubber bag (your body) at the moment. Consider: if you pig out to the extent of three slices of pizza before bedtime every night for a whole month, you'll gain about four pounds as the lingering souvenir of your month of wild abandon. Yet even that extreme weight gain is less than half your daily intake and disposal of water.
Most of the changes in weight you see have nothing to do with how many calories you're eating or burning. Instead, all you're seeing is how many pounds of water happen to be inside the rubber bag at the moment. How many bleak mornings of dark despair endured by forlorn dieters who indulged in a bowl of salted popcorn at midnight then slaked their thirst with a large glass of water in the middle of the night, would have been taken in stride had only the implications of human being as water pump been fully comprehended?
This is why all good diet guides will recommend that you either weight yourself once a week, or try to ignore the day-to-day fluctuations. The important thing is the long term trend. By long term I mean months.
The graph below is my weight over the past few months (the yellow line is weight, the red line is a rolling average):
You can see that my weight fluctuates by a couple of pounds on a day to day basis, and sometimes hardly changes over the course of a month or even longer. This is perfectly normal.

You've had a bad cold for 5 days, that'll really screw with your body, with your energy levels, digestive system and water retention. So overall this hasn't been a great month to start! But don't give up, this is not a good month to be judging you progress on.

That's great, but do you know exactly how much you are eating? I have found in the past that I thought I was eating quite healthily, but when I actually started recording it all (and I do mean all) I found my calorie intake was more than I thought. I would really recommend you keep a food diary, at least for a few weeks, to work out exactly what you are eating and where all the calories are coming from. You may be surprised.
Losing weight is all about the calories. Whatever fad diet books and the like will tell you, losing weight is simple but not easy. It's just a case of using more calories than you consume. If you do that consistently you will lose weight in the long term.
You work from home, so I guess, like me you spend a lot of your day sat at a computer or a desk. If that's the case the amount of calories you burn in a day is going to be less than average, so you need to take that into account when working out how much to eat. Don't suddenly reduce your intake, that will just be too much of a change. Instead set yourself a limit that's a little bit less than what you currently eat, and then reduce it a little every week over a couple of months. That way you'll get used to it slowly, and it won't seem so different. You will gradually get used to eating less over time.
So really, really don't give up. Losing weight, especially if you live a largely sedentary life as so many of us do, is a long haul, requires commitment, but it isn't complicated. You just need to consume fewer calories than you use over a concerted period of time, and you will lose weight. And it is worth it, I speak from experience. I've been losing weight gradually for over nine months, and will probably need to keep going for another nine months to hit my final target. It's been slow going, and there have been a few tough times, but once you get here you really feel it. I've done it by doing nothing more complex than eating less and doing more. I don't eat a special diet, I still eat chocolate and cheese and the occasional bit of cake, but overall I'm consuming fewer calories, and that's what really matters.
Oh, and all the research shows that losing weight slowly is much better than losing it fast. You are more likely to keep going, to lose more in the long term, and to keep it off once you've lost it. I've lost an average of less than a pound a week over the last ten months, but it all adds up in the end.
So best of luck. Keep at it, and don't give up. You can do it. You just need to look to the long term, not next week or next month, but where you want to be a year from now.

Snapps we can be wii workout buddies! I'm sure we will get there. We will have to keep updating on how it's going.
Paul what can I say but THANK YOU! The chart, your advice it all made sense. A food diary huh? I've honestly avoided doing one of those because I was really afraid of what it would say. I have been a bit sedentary since moving to the UK, we do have 3 dogs that keep me busy and we are learning how to all go on a walk together (its a bit of a comical farce when we try) so that I don't have to wait on someone to help me.
I will take in everything you have said and keep these bits of information in mind and just look at my final weight at the end of each month. I'll keep coming back here with updates. Oh and so looking forward to the Wii Fit Plus game next month!!! It's coming out in the states on Oct. 4, but at last look not in the UK until Nov.
Good luck everyone, keep it up! And Paul thank you and good luck on your journey!

Hey there, no problem. Hope it help
Don't worry about weighing yourself more often than that, but just be aware that your weight can bounce around a lot from day to day, so don't take these fluctuations too much to heart.
