I know Dawn asked about muscle vs. fat a few months ago, but I have a few thoughts to share. If you're building muscle and losing fat, you might not see a change in your weight, but you may see a change in your physique. If your weight isn't decreasing, but your clothes are feeling looser, you've probably exchanged fat for muscle. Since muscle is much denser than fat, you'll "occupy" less space. I started doing more strength training and less aerobics over the last three weeks. My weight is unchanged, but suddenly, this week, everyone noticed a difference. At work, I often heard "Wow! You've lost a lot of weight!", but the truth is my weight has largely stabilized this month.
Yep, after a couple of slips in the last couple of weeks, where I bounced back up-to 101-102 kg, I'm now back down and was 99kg (218 pounds) this morning. So not going quickly, but it's a pretty steady loss of about 2 to 3kg a month.
If I can keep this steady pace, I should get to my target weight of 80 to 85kg around the end of the year.
On the subject of muscle mass: yes, adding muscle can definitely stop you losing *weight*. I've found that in the past. However an increased muscle mass *should* increase your resting metabolic rate, causing you to burn more calories during the day, so you want to be doing a bit of both.
I've been using My Fitness Coach as well as Wii Fit, and its fitness test gets you to measure various parts of your body (no sniggering at the back ), such as your biceps and thighs, which it uses to assess your body, rather than just relying on your weight.

After six months of eating carefully, and using the Wii Fit, My Fitness Coach, and EA Sports Active, I have finally hit my half way target.
I started off at about 109kg (240 pounds or 17 stone 3 pounds) back at the end of January.
I got up this morning and weighed myself and I am now 95kg (209 pounds or 15 stone)! That is half way to 81kg, the upper limit of the healthy weight range for my height.
I work is out as a little more than one pound per week, which is think is a very sensible rate to lose it at. I eat much less than I used to, but more importantly I think I've got out of a lot of bad habits, and into a few more good ones.
Fingers crossed I should no longer be classed as "overweight" by my Wii Fit by the new year, I'll just have to be very careful over Christmas
It's going slowly, about 1kg a month (that's 2.2lb), but that's fine with me. I should be in the "normal" range for my height/age/sex in time for the winter. My plan was always to take up to two years to very slowly lose the weight. It's allowed my body, and more importantly my brain, to adjust to the change. I strongly believe that losing weight slowly, while it might be frustrating at times, is better than losing it quickly as you are much less likely to put it all back on afterwards.
