I've done a fair amount of yoga in the past and am actually pretty good at it, but even I wince at the idea of doing the shoulder stand. This is a pretty tough position which shouldn't really be attempted without proper instruction from a real live (and competent) yoga instructor. An animated instructor is not enough.

What I find most surprising is the lack of warnings, which you will find in any decent yoga book. It would appear I'm not the only one who thinks this. This article over at suite101.com gives advice for those contemplating the last four yoga poses in Wii Fit. I would recommend that anyone thinking of tackling those poses read this article, and check out other yoga guides first.

I also think that the shoulder stand should not be attempted alone.

Thousands of people a year injure themselves because they attempt yoga on their own, or with poorly trained or inexperienced instructors, done join them.

 I did this today. I was very careful and did watch the tutorial carefully first. I have no problem keeping in position once my legs are straight, but I cannot get my feet over my head, I doubt many people can especially over 35's ! I do agree though it shouldn't be attempted by anyone who hasn't done it before (I have). I think the real risk is getting into the stand as some people may crash back down onto the mat as they don't have the ab control to lower slowly. Maybe the shoulder stand should be kept locked for beginners.

I agree! I pulled something in my shoulder doing this one....I am 40ish...so not real hip to the fact that YOGA stands for "you're outfo great agony"....but the dude makes it look so easy....

Indeed, start off doing the easier yoga poses and work up to the shoulder stand once you've developed your stomach muscles and got more stretchy.
