Being a techno-geek kinda person, I ask myself "What would I expect from a Tai Chi on the Wii?"
The Balance board would not work too well since Tai Chi moves around the floor and has numerous foot positionings. The Wii controllers don't seem to be of much use here either. This would essentially reduce 'Wii Tai Chi' to a DVD-like follow-along mode!?! Maybe being able to tell the Wii "only show me moves XX through YY ositions" would be of some value (a customizable DVD-like follow-along mode)!?
I most enjoy the 'flow' of Tai Chi, so having to stop and position myself on the Board repeatedly (as we do for a Wii Yoga routine) would not seem enjoyable. Would I be willing to invest in a large "foot placement mat" big enough to allow a Tai Chi Routine? Hmmmmm
I think something like the EA Sports Active leg strap system might work, using the nun-chuck to measure your leg movements, and the Wii Mote to measure your hand movements.

The new "Your Shape" for the Wii uses a video camera to help ensure you are doing the exercises properly. This allows the software to dynamically suggest "corrections" to your actions and/or position as you exercise... no controller needed. This may be an ideal way to implement a Tai Chi routine.
I hope that this technology catches on, and Nintendo taps into it. Maybe such technology could correct my Wii Tennis swing <grin>!!!!
I would love to see Tai Chi on the Wii, but it does present some challenges. There's a lot of coordination of feet and hands, and often in 2-4 different directions. The problem with controllers and nunchucks is that the hands are supposed to be held in a particular way which will be compromised if something is in the hands. Also, the movements might tangle the cable between the two, or cause other issues. I think it might require a whole new input system, maybe a mat plus wrist and leg straps?
I've read that the video-based system mentioned above doesn't work all that well.
It all sounds way cool huh? well being a 20 year martial arts practitioner I have been thinking of this since I first saw what was possible in the old nintendo and sega games. I was just trying to dream of the technology.
I was inspired again about 5 years ago watching a documentary of Xray filming how a group of monks trained in kung fu. It explained how and showed how the body moves and can be trained/developed very clearly. As a teacher I wanted to create an interactive training program for my students to use at home.
My best trainer has always been repetition and fine tuning from an individual instructor/master.
I have been impressed with the Wii yoga and strength training. BUT the mind and body must learn full body coordination or the whole principal of Tai Chi is lost.
People are commenting how they want to see Tai Chi on the Wii COOL!
People are commenting on how difficult it would be to make it happen technologicaly. NO PROBLEM!
Tai Chi Chuan is simply Crane and Snake style Kung Fu in a form, being why it moves around in a big area. BUT it is based on Chi Kung which all is done standing still or shifting stances. Learn the moves as a Chi Kung program and then you will know how to do the form. STICK TO THE BASICS WHEN TRAINING. this is what all my teachers have ever pointed out to me and were oh so right!
SO, I am wanting to help a programmer make a program. Wii already has the technology.

New to WiiFit and quite disappointed at the lack of range from Nintendo... yes, Tai Chi and Qui Gong would be fantastic for starters but also Alexander Technique - how do we get them to do this??? I notice they locked a Tai Chi string on the official site which doesn't look hopeful.
It seems that if you can do yoga there has to be a way to do tai chi with wi fit. I would love to see it. I realize it wouldn't be a real class with a real instructor teaching me, but something is probably better than nothing!
As a Tai Chi Teacher I have found the best part of learning is PRACTICING AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. In this high speed world of not having the ability to dedicate more than about 15 to 30 minutes toward exercise at home.... THE Wii is a great practice pal !
I want to see a variety of things available for people like my long distance students who I see rarely. If they have a regular routine to practice, they can better their knowledge and skill level so when I see them again REVIEW IS NOT NECESSARY.
Anyone out there could practice Tai Chi on the Wii and go to a Teacher once in a while for a touch up lesson on how to improve, what to pay attention too, and what to add to the routine to progress.
I also think all of this can be done in a practice program/game if done properly.
Just an offer from me as an experienced teacher to anyone who might know how to put this program together "I AM AVAILABLE"
