Have you watched one of the latest Bollywood hits called `3 idiots’? If so, you might have noticed the different perceptions towards life and success held by two people in the film -- protagonist Rancho, played by Aamir Khan and his classmate Chatur Ramalingam played by Omi Vaidya.Chatur considers money as the measure of success. Posh bungalow, high profile job and a high income are the most important things in Chatur’s life and he considers himself a very successful person. Rancho, on the other hand, followed his passion for the studies, rather than considering it a money-making tool and became a famous scientist.
The director in the film clearly portrayed a difference between those who runs after money and those who considers money less important than the values in life. In this capitalist age, it is only natural that people evaluate success in terms of money. But it is utterly foolish if you think that money can bring in happiness. Money may be able to help you buy expensive gorgeous attire, or it may bring you posh villas, cars and comforts of an ayurvedic spa resort or a five star hotel.
But do all these materialistic aspects of life really make any one happy? ``Only to a certain extent,’’ says Amar, a psychologist in Kerala. ``But there are many other things that the money cannot buy or can influence. People should realize that emotions like love and happiness and a peaceful and content state of mind etc are mostly not related to money, but they are more related to your attitude. You cannot buy a true friend or a lover with money and you cannot attain peace of mind or inculcate positive values in children through money.’’ he adds.
