I reported over a week ago that Wii sales had jumped 37%. From the looks of the latest charts from VGChartz, this rise has continued unabated for the second week of October. Meanwhile, PS3 and XBox360 sales remain pretty stagnant, with only a tiny increase.
It's hard to tell if this is just due to people being more organised for the holiday season this year, grabbing their Wii well in advance of any rush, but Nintendo must be laughing all the way to the bank. Despite both Microsoft and Sony both dropping their prices, they have not made a dent in Nintendo's dominance of the market. Both will have had to cut their margins, while Nintendo will have grown theirs on the back of falling component prices and economies of scale, while keeping the same retail price.
ELSPA's latest charts also show the Wii Fit is still at No. 1 in the Wii sales charts. We can expect to see more games support the balance board as an increasing number of Wii owners manage to get their hands on one.
The Wii Fit and Wii look set to replace the celebrity exercise video as the home exercise tool of choice for many people. Hopefully competition in the fitness games market (e.g. the new Jillian Michaels Fitness Ultimatum) will spur Nintendo on to releasing an expansion pack or update to Wii Fit to keep it fresh and address some of its shortcomings.
