Object of the game

Your Mii is trapped in a large bubble that floats in mid-air. You must navigate it along a river to the rainbow finish line while avoiding assorted hazards.

Equipment required

This game requires:

  • The Wii Balance Board

MET

Balance Bubble has a MET of 2, meaning that it is a light intensity activity.

Time

This game takes up to ninety seconds. You can shorten this time by crossing the finish line or by hitting a hazard.

How to play the game

Shift your weight around on the Wii Balance Board to propel the bubble along the river. The bubble moves forward, back, left, right, or diagonally according to how you lean. The further you lean, the faster it goes.

Levels

There are two levels of Balance Bubble, Beginner and Advanced. They differ only in the hazards. The river is the same in both.

Scoring

The game is played against the clock, and if you cross the finish line, your score is the time you take to finish the course, the faster the better.

If you fail to finish the course, either because you crashed into a hazard or because you ran out of time, your score will be the distance you covered, the further the better, but all distance scores are "worse" than all time scores.

Hazards

There are two types of hazard in this game: rocks and river banks, and bees.

Rocks and River Banks

The river has banks, of course, and there are several rocks as well as a small island. Hitting any of them will burst the bubble and drop your Mii into the river, ending the game. This applies even to the rocks that support the rainbow that serves as a finish line.

Bees

Both levels feature bees. The bees fly around, and if you touch one, the bubble bursts and your Mii falls into the river. In the Beginner level, it is possible to hit a bee, but you will find that they are generally not in your way. It is very easy to hit a bee in the Advanced level, and one of them is a direct obstruction.

Hints and tips

  • In general, unless you have made a mistake, you will not need to go backwards. The key to getting a good score, obviously, is to stand at the front of the Wii Balance Board, with your toes over the edge, so that your weight is as far forward as possible.
  • Pay close attention to the movement of the bees. Each bee follows a set path, and these fall into two categories: straight-line, and circular. Straight-line bees sprint along a line, either horizontal or vertical, then stop, rest, turn around, rest some more, and set off again in the reverse direction. Just before they set off, however, they will warn you by wiggling their tails. Circular bees fly in a circle, either solo or in an equally-spaced pair. You will not have to face a circular bee that is flying "against" you, but there is a risk of floating into the back of them if you are not paying attention.
  • Be very careful of the last bee in the Advanced level. It flies in a straight line from left to right and back, but the most dangerous aspect of this is that the path ends directly in the only feasible path to the finish line, just before you get there. It is, in fact, the reason why there are no scores between approximately 29.5 seconds and 31.5 seconds. If you miss the 29.5 second boundary, you must wait until the bee moves out of the way before continuing.
  • If you are having problems with this game, consistently crashing out, try practicing with Ski Jump. This has a similar fine-control balance requirement, but is more forgiving and gives you clearly visible feedback on how well you are doing.
  • If you are having trouble making fine movements in this game, do some yoga exercises to help improve your balance, particularly Palm Tree and Half-Moon.

Silliness

  • If you make it past the finish line, all the flowers blossom in your honour.
  • If you get too close to the edge of the river (rocks, island, or main banks) your Mii will suddenly thrash his arms and legs as if in a sudden panic at what a stupid situation this is.
  • If you fail and your bubble is popped, the Miis on the banks keep clapping. The Miis, it seems, are not interested in cheering you on, they are not there to encourage you. No, the Miis just like to clap and shout. Miis are very strange creatures indeed.
