Object of the game
Your Mii has decided to see how many times he can step in a given time limit.
Equipment required
This game requires use of:
- The Wii Balance Board
MET
Free Step has a MET of 3, meaning that it is a moderate intensity activity.
Levels and Time
There are three levels of Free Step, each having a different time limit and each with a different step goal (see Step Goal below).
10 minutes
- This level has a duration of 10 minutes.
- The step goal is 800 steps.
20 minutes
- This level has a duration of 20 minutes.
- The step goal is 1600 steps.
30 minutes
- This level has a duration of 30 minutes.
- The step goal is 2400 steps.
How to play the game
Stepping
- Step up and down on the board, alternating feet, until the end of the time limit.
- You can switch which foot you step with first from time to time, but there is no effect on the game if you don't.
- If you step too quickly, the game will not register your footsteps.
Step Goal
- This is the minimum number of steps you should strive to achieve.
- You can achieve more than this number of steps - or less.
Sounds
- The WiiMote will produce sounds to help you keep the rhythm.
- To switch between sound modes, press the 'A' button.
- There are four sound modes:
- Clicks
- Beeps
- Voice Count - This counts the steps, 'one, two, three, four', in the language to which you have set your Wii.
- Silence - This is a handy mode for when you are watching TV (see Watching TV below)
Rhythm
- There are three levels of rhythm:
- Slow
- Faster
- Fastest
- To switch between rhythm levels, press the Cross button.
Watching TV
- You can watch TV while stepping to relieve the boredom of the repetitive nature of this game.
- From time to time, the WiiMote will keep you informed of:
- how many steps you have done
- how much time is remaining
- whether you are going too fast
- when the game has come to an end.
- The WiiMote will also remind you to move your arms.
Scoring
- There is no score as such in this game. At the end, you are awarded a number of stars. If you meet your step goal, you will be awarded 4 stars.
- The number of steps achieved is not saved.
Hints and tips
- If you want more of a challenge, use a dedicated stand to raise the Wii Balance Board. This will raise the MET of the activity.
- If you watch TV while stepping, be careful that you are not going too fast or getting off centre, especially if you have raised the Wii Balance Board, as this might cause you to go off balance and fall.
- Make sure that you are not wearing anything that could catch on the Wii Balance Board, particularly if you have raised it, as this might cause you to fall.
Silliness
This game makes me seriously wonder about Miis. The Miis beside you on the stage are apparently content to stand on a stage for ten, twenty, or thirty minutes flapping their arms while you get some exercise. And the Miis in the audience are apparently content to sit in the dark watching one person step up and down while a bunch of other people stand around flapping their arms.
Miis are strange.
