What is this?

This is a yoga position for the spine and ankles.

Benefits

Palm Tree:

  • Stretches the spine.
  • Tones the ankles.

Equipment required

This exercise requires:

  • The Wii Balance Board

MET

Palm Tree has a MET of 2, meaning that it is a light intensity activity.

Time

This exercise takes two minutes.

Levels

There is only one level of Palm Tree.

How to do it

At all times, follow the movements of your trainer.

Initial Position

  • Stand on the Wii Balance Board with your legs apart.
  • Pull your shoulders back.
  • Keep your back straight.
  • Your arms should be at your sides.

Set-up

  • Raise your arms straight up over your head.
  • Raise yourself on your toes as if you were being pulled upwards by your arms.

The position

  • Lean forward slightly.
  • Keeping them straight, rotate your arms downwards and back, so that they are behind you, palms upwards so that the thumbs are pointing upwards.
  • Push your chest forward and your shoulders back as if you were about to take off and fly.

Holding the Position

  • Breathe in and out, keeping your breath steady.
  • Concentrate on your balance so that you keep the red dot in the yellow circle.

Unwinding

  • Let your arms drop to your sides.
  • Lower yourself so that your feet are flat on the Wii Balance Board.

Repetitions

  • There is only one repetition of this exercise.

Scoring

You are awarded points based on how well you kept the red dot within the yellow circle.

Problems

  • If you are having problems keeping your balance, open your shoulders more, that is, spread out your arms further.
  • If you are having balance problems, make sure that your chest is pushed forward, as if you were throwing yourself to the winds.
  • If you are having balance problems, make sure that you are not pushing your pelvis or stomach too far forward.
  • Keep your head and neck aligned with your body. Keep your eyes straight ahead.
