Object of the Game
Your Mii is down at the boxing gym, practicing moves on a mechanical punch-bag. But this is no ordinary punch-bag - it punches back!
Rhythm boxing is a tape-following game, akin to games like Dance Dance Revolution, but in this case the tape is not shown directly. Rather, you follow the example of a trainer-Mii.
Equipment required
This game requires the use of:
- Wii Balance Board
- Wii Remote
- Nunchuck
MET
Rhythm Boxing has a MET of 3.0, meaning that it is a moderate intensity activity.
Levels
There are three levels of Rhythm Boxing differing in the complexity of the moves that must be made and the time you require.
3 minutes
The three-minute version features simple moves in simple sequences, and takes about four minutes, despite being advertised as three.
6 minutes
The six-minute version features slightly more complex sequences and eliminates the very simplest of the 3-minute game's sequences. It takes in reality about 8 minutes.
10 minutes
The ten-minute version features more complex sequences and eliminates the simpler of the 3-minute game's sequences. It takes in reality about 13 minutes.
How to play the game
You work with a trainer Mii who shows you what to do and then you do the same things. He will show you some or all of the following moves (all of which could be performed with Left and Right swapped):
- Step forward with the Right foot, hit with the Right hand, step back onto the board and "block" three times. (3-minutes only)
- Step forward with the Right foot, hit Right, Left, step back onto the board and "block" two times.
- Step forward with the Right foot, hit Right, Left, Right, step back onto the board and "block" one time.
- Step backward with the Left foot, hit Right, Left, step back onto the board and "block" two times.
- Step forward with the Right foot, hit Right, Left, Right, step back onto the board and "block" one time, step backward with the Left foot, hit Right then Left, step back onto the board and "block" two times.
- Step forward with the Right foot, hit Right, Left, back on the board, "block" once, "dodge" to the Left (bag tries to hit you), "dodge" to the Right (bag tries to hit you).
When it is time to punch, a small red-and-orange target appears on the relevant side of the punch-bag. The ideal moment to punch is just as the target appears.
"Block" means to make a small movement with the controllers, as if you are blocking a punch. In fact, a small downward movement with both hands is sufficient.
Free-form punching
At the end of a session, the trainer gives you the option to rack up a few more points with a bout of free-format punching. This basically translates into a hail of right and left punches.
Timing
Timing is important in this game, because you score better for punching at the right moment.
Scoring
Your score is calculated per punch:
- You score two points if your timing is very good, meaning that you punched as the little target appears on the punch-bag.
- You score one point if you are slightly late.
- You score zero points for each missed punch, including punches where you have moved the wrong leg.
- You score one point for each block.
The overall score is the sum of the individual scores.
