Object of the Game
Your Mii, riding his Segway PT, must pop all the balloons produced by a bunch of robotic moles.
Equipment required
This game requires use of:
- Wii Balance Board
- Wiimote
MET
Segway Circuit has a MET of 2, meaning that it is a light intensity activity.
Levels
There are three levels of Segway Circuit, each taking place in a different part of Wuhu Island. Each contains a different number of balloons that you must pop:
Beginner
- Takes place on the beach behind Camel Rock.
- Contains 9 balloons: 8 balloons projected from holes and 1 balloon stolen by a mole.
Advanced
- Takes place on the hill near the Great Bridge (the side furthest from town).
- Contains 13 balloons: 11 balloons projected from holes and 2 balloons stolen by a mole.
Extreme
- Takes place in and near the town.
- Contains 22 balloons: 19 balloons projected from holes and 3 balloons stolen by a mole.
Time
Each level has its own maximum time. The game will take no more than this time, but it could end before this if you capture all the balloons.
- Beginner: Maximum time: 180 seconds.
- Advanced: Maximum time: 210 seconds.
- Extreme: Maximum time: 240 seconds.
How to play the game
Riding the Segway
- Lean forward or backward on the Wii Balance Board to make the Segway go faster or slower.
- Turn your Segway by tilting the Wiimote from side to side. You should be holding the Wiimote horizontally between your hands.
Locating balloons
- You can look around you. The balloons are easy to see.
- You can look at the map in the lower right hand corner of the screen. This not only shows you where the balloons are, but the type of balloons they are. You can press '1' to view a greater area.
Methods of popping balloons
There are two ways to pop balloons:
- You can ride into them on your Segway.
- You can send a pet to pop them (see below).
Phases of the game
The game is divided into two phases:
- Popping stationary balloons: You will be presented with a number of balloons projected from holes by moles. You must pop each balloon.
- Chasing the mole: After, and only after, you have popped all the balloons coming from holes, the game will inform you that a mole has stolen the rest of the balloons. If you look around, or use your map, you will find a mole who is sitting in a hole, watching you. When you approach, he will jump out of the hole and drive away as fast as he can. On his back, he has a balloon. You must chase him and pop the balloon. He may have more than one balloon, in which case, after you have popped one balloon, you will have to chase him down to pop another one. When you have popped the last balloon, the mole explodes!
Pets
- The pet can be either a dog or a cat. It will, by default, be a dog, however, unless you have created a Pet Mii for a cat.
- The pet is not with you at the beginning of the game. At some point in the game, you will encounter him.
- To launch your pet at a balloon, aim your Segway in the direction of the balloon and press the 'A' button on the WiiMote. The 'A' button acts as a whistle in this game.
- If aimed properly and within range, if a balloon coming out of a hole is inflated, the pet will pop it then return to you.
- You can launch your pet at the mole when you are chasing him using the same procedure as when you sent him to pop a balloon coming from a hole. The difference is that the pet will not pop the balloon on the mole's back. Instead, he will short out some of the mole's circuits, causing him to slow down temporarily, allowing you a chance to catch up to the mole. After slowing down the mole, the pet will then return to you.
- You will find that your pet acts independently at times. He might pop a balloon without being launched by you first. He might go after the mole without you telling him to do so.
Hazards
Most of the hazards make you lose time. One of them directly deducts points from your total score.
Deflating balloons
- The mole may deflate the balloon before you can pop it.
- After the mole deflates the balloon, he will pop up out of the hole, where you can, if you are not careful, run into him (see Running into a mole below).
- After the mole deflates the balloon, he might decide to tunnel (see Tunnelling moles below).
Running into a mole
- If you run into a mole who has been projecting a balloon out of a hole, you will lose points.
- Note, however, that if you run into a mole that you are chasing, that is one who has a ballon on his back, in such a way as not to pop the balloon - from the front, for instance - then you will not lose any points.
Tunnelling moles
- After the mole has deflated the balloon, he may pop back into the hole and reinflate it, so if you wait around for him, you will have lost time, but should be easily able to pop the ballon. However he may, instead, decide to tunnel to another hole.
- If the mole decides to tunnel, you will see it making its way underground by the tracks of the dirt it throws up. The mole will go to an empty hole.
Crazy driving by the mole
- When you are chasing the mole, he zooms around at a great speed and drives as if he has downed two bottles of vodka so it is hard to predict exactly where he will go.
- The mole often zooms around cliff edges and the like, leading to the possibility of dying (see Death below).
Bouncing
- When you run into a mole (see Running into a mole above), if you keep going forward, you might bounce back into the mole, hitting it again, and thus losing more points.
- During the chase, when you pop a balloon on the back of the mole, you will bounce back with some force, throwing you off-line.
Smokescreen
- At the Extreme level, when the mole has projected the final balloon, he will put out a smokescreen to mislead you as to his route.
Death
- If you go off a cliff or go into the sea, you will die.
- Don't worry, you will be resurrected - back at the starting line, unfortunately, meaning you lose a great deal of time.
- When you die, you will also lose your pet if you had one with you.
Scoring
Score calculation
- Your score is calculated from the number of each type of balloon that you have popped plus the time remaining before the end of of the game minus any points lost for hitting a mole who was projecting a balloon from a hole.
- If you hit a mole who has jumped up out of a hole, each hit costs you 5 points. There is no point loss if you hit the thieving mole during the chase, that is, hit, say, his front, so that you fail to pop the balloon.
- In all the levels, the balloons projected from the holes are worth 10 points each.
- Each second of time remaining until the end of the game is worth 1 point each.
- While the value of the red balloon is the same in all the levels, there are differences in the values of the green balloons in the Advanced and Extreme levels. Note that the mole projects the stolen balloons in a set order; the final balloon is always the red balloon.
- Beginner: The 1 stolen balloon, a red balloon, is worth 100 points.
- Advanced: Of the 2 stolen balloons, the light green balloon is worth 50 points and the red balloon is worth 100 points.
- Extreme: Of the 3 stolen balloons, the dark green balloon is worth 50 points, the light green balloon is worth 70 points, and the red balloon is worth 100 points. This - dark green, light green, red - is the order in which the mole projects the balloons.
- You can only gain a score that will give you more than two stars if you pop all the balloons, including the ones stolen by the mole.
Examples of scores
- Let's say you are on the Extreme level. With 25 seconds remaining of game play, you have popped all the balloons projecting from holes and the three balloons stolen by the mole. As well, you avoided hitting any of the moles who projected balloons from holes. Your score would be calculated as follows:
(19 x 10 points) + 50 points + 70 points + 100 points + 25 points - 0 points = 435 points
- However, let's say you are on the same level, that is, Extreme, but, at the end of the game, while you have managed to pop all the balloons projecting from holes, and two of the ones stolen by the mole, the dark green and the light green ones, you failed to pop the red balloon. Unfortunately, while popping the balloons projected from holes, you also hit a mole once. Your score would be calculated as follows:
(19 x 10 points) + 50 points + 70 points + 0 points + 0 points - 5 points = 305 points
Theory
The theory behind everything you do in this game is that of the 'best deal' problem. Is whatever you are faced with the best deal you have or should you move on to another? For instance, let's say just as you approach a balloon being projected from a hole, the mole deflates it. You can, if the mole isn't tunnelling, wait for him to reinflate it or you can move on to another balloon and come back to this one: which is the best deal? That depends on the circumstances. For instance, if the just-deflated balloon is far away from other balloons, it might be better to wait, rather than to have to come back.
Another example is the use of the pet. Say you have a choice of two balloons at which you can aim him, so that, while he is off to pop one, you can be popping the other. Which choice is the best deal?
Even during the chase, you have to consider the best deal. Should you, for instance, send the pet to slow the mole, or given your speed, might that mean that you risk passing him instead of popping the balloon?
Hints and tips
Be quick
- Speed is of the essence in this game, so stand at the front of the Wii Balance Board, with your toes over the edge, so that your weight is as far forward as possible. If you have to go backwards, to avoid hitting a mole or to get out of a corner, just lean back on your heels.
- Avoid riding over bumps such as the filled in molehills as this will slow you down.
- Ignore the tip about not riding over bumps in the Beginner level when it comes to the ramps. In this level, the ramps are your friend, particularly the that the mole goes over right after he jumps out of his hole.
Keep moving
- When you have aimed your pet at a balloon, for instance, move on to pop another balloon while he is taking care of the other one. He will rejoin you when he is done. If he missed it for some reason, you can always turn round to deal with it.
- If you send your pet to pop the final balloon projecting from a hole, immediately start heading to the place where the thieving mole will be. He is only appears in a set number of places.
- If the mole deflates his balloon before you reach it, if the hole is far enough out that it would be inconvenient to come back to it, wait by the hole until the mole reinflates the balloon. If the balloon is close to others, however, move on to one of them.
- If the mole starts tunnelling, move on to another balloon.
Locating balloons
- On the Advanced level, you should use the map to locate the balloons that are on the hill as they are hard to see on such a steep slope.
- Use your map to locate the mole should you lose sight of him during the chase.
Avoid hitting moles that come out of holes
- If a mole deflates his balloon before you hit it, back up immediately to avoid hitting the mole.
Tunnelling moles
- If a mole has nowhere to go, that is, if he is in a corner, or one of the areas surrounded by bricks (that used to contain trees), then he will pop back into the hole and reinflate the balloon.
- If the mole has somewhere else to go, then he might tunnel to another empty hole. Whether or not the mole starts tunnelling appears to be randomly determined.
- Sometimes a mole will start tunnelling before you have even had a chance to get to his balloon to try to pop it.
- Sometimes none of the moles tunnel.
- Tunnelling moles will head for the same holes each time, and, as you are faster than a tunnelling mole, you can go ahead and get there first.
Chase patterns
- Despite the drunken way the thieving mole zooms around in the chase, there is a general pattern to his movement. He will tend to take the same routes from game to game, although it is difficult to pinpoint exactly when he will slow down, turn, etc.
- If you know that the mole is going to take a particular route, you can take a shortcut to head him off, if there is one. He will turn around as soon as he sees you, but that's just what you want because you need him facing away from you to be able to pop the balloon.
- You cannot force a mole into a corner. You just bounce off the mole if you hit him.
- If you are quick enough when the mole jumps out of the hole or when he turns in front of you, you can ride right through the balloon. This manoeuvre, however, puts you off line for getting the next balloon.
- Try to get close to the mole when he goes around corners. On rare occassions, he will become jammed then you can pop all his balloons with no problem at all.
- If you lose sight of the the drunken mole, don't worry. He will loiter about so that you can catch up with him. Moles love to taunt you.
Use of pets: general
- Correct pet use is of crucial importance for doing well in this game.
- If you think that a mole might deflate the balloon before you reach it, send your pet to pop it. He won't be hit by the mole and so, if the mole does pop out, you won't lose points.
- If you send your pet to pop a balloon then move on, if the mole comes out of the hole before the pet reaches it, if you are out of the pet's range, he will stay by the hole. If the mole inflates the balloon again, the pet will then pop it and return to you.
- If a mole is tunnelling and you aim your pet at it, as long as it goes to a hole within your pet's range, your pet will pop the balloon as soon as the mole inflates it.
- If you keep whistling for your pet, either when popping stationary balloons or during the chase, you might confuse him so that you lose him.
Use of pets: the chase
- Only launch your pet at the mole when the mole is within the pet's range and when you are aimed at the mole.
- When you are close to the thieving mole, send your pet to chase him right before he pops out of the hole so that your pet will already be running when he jumps.
- Quickly relaunch your pet at the mole after he has shorted him out: this makes the mole go even slower. Your pattern should be launch, observe the mole being shorted out, pet starts returning, relaunch, see the mole being shorted out even more, etc, until you can catch up with the mole to pop the balloon. It should only take two or three launches to do this. Make certain that you aim your pet properly when you do this.
- If aimed properly, your pet will be able to locate the mole during the chase even if he is putting out a smokescreen.
- If you lose your pet during the chase, he will eventually reappear, but it may be too late at that point.
- If, for some reason, you lose your pet while you are popping the balloons projected from holes or you never find a pet while you are doing this, don't worry, there will be a pet waiting somewhere in the area of the thieving mole. You will either see him before the start of the chase or just afterwards.
Death
- If you die during the chase, the mole will be waiting for you in the general area you were right before you died.
- If you die during the chase, when you find the mole, just whistle for your pet and he will reappear.
Practice
- Practice, practice, practice!
- This game is much harder than it might initially look, but one can get high scores if one learns the patterns and gets a feel for the necessary speed.
