Object of the Game

Your Mii has gone down to the skate park to show off his technique with a board. Being a careful sort of person, your Mii is wearing the latest in helmets, gloves, and elbow and knee pads. (What? Careful? Miis aren't careful! Just watch what they do on bicycles, without pads or helmets!)

Equipment required

This game requires the use of:

  • Wii Balance Board

MET

Skateboard Arena has a MET of 3, meaning that it is a moderate intensity activity.

Levels and time

There are three levels of Skateboard Arena, differing in the number of arenas and what is in each one. In the first two levels you start with 60 seconds and gain 30 more at the end of each successfully-completed arena.

Beginner

  • Takes about 3 minutes for a full game.
  • Six arenas to complete.

Advanced

  • Takes about 4 minutes.
  • Seven arenas to complete.

Free

  • Takes 5 minutes.
  • Skateboard around the arena for 5 minutes and do whichever tricks you want.

How to play the game

You must turn the balance board through 90 degrees clockwise. You stand on it with your left foot towards the screen. If you are left-handed, you can tell the game, and then you are expected to stand the other way around. Either way, the foot closest to the screen is the "front" foot and the foot furthest from the screen is the "back" foot. The four directions are "forward" (towards the screen), "backward" (away from the screen), "left" and "right. Locations are "in front" (forwards from you), "behind" (backwards from you), "to the left" or "on the left", and "to the right" or "on the right.

Moving the skateboard

  • To start, push off with your back foot: put it on the ground "behind" you, and push "forwards" as if you are starting up a real skateboard, then pick up your foot and put it on the board.
  • To go in a straight line: stand still.
  • To turn to the right or left: lean "to the right" or "to the left".
  • To keep up your speed: wiggle back and forth from "left" to "right". You have to wiggle far enough to get the scraping noise and black marks on the floor.
  • To stop quickly: lean away from the screen. The front of your Mii's skateboard will lift up and you will stop quickly.
  • To make a snap turn: lean away from the screen, as for a quick stop, but also lean "to the left" or "to the right".
  • To jump, make the usual knee-straightening movement as found in Ski Jump, Tightrope Walk and Obstacle Course.

Scoring panels

Arranged around the arena are blue glowing "scoring panels". If you pass over them, you score a point for each one. They can be found in:

  • "Light strips" on the floor: simply ride or jump over them.
  • On top of small linear barriers called "benches": these must be jumped over, although you can also skim along them.
  • Around the edges of low wooden "platforms": you must jump onto the platform, or ride or jump off. Like the benches, you can skim along them.
  • On top of ramps: ride up the ramp to hit the scoring panel. You can ride over it or you can jump. If you jump the Mii will perform a trick with the board. Some ramps have a fence behind them. To clear the fence you must do a trick.
  • At the top edge of half-pipe sections: ride up them to hit the scoring panels at the top edge. Again, if you jump at the top, the Mii with perform a trick.

Scoring

Your score is calculated as:

  • Each time you move over a lit scoring panel, you score a point and the panel becomes dark.
  • If you move over the boundary between consecutive list scoring panels, you score a point for each one and both of them become dark.
  • If you perform a trick on a ramp or half-pipe, you score another point above and beyond the point(s) you got for any lit scoring panels.
  • If you run out of time, the game ends and your score is the total number of points you have scored so far.
  • Each arena has a scoring target, the number of points required to complete it. If you score enough points to complete an arena, you advance to the next one and gain 30 seconds on the clock.
  • Some arenas contain traffic cones. If you hit one, you lose a point.
  • When you complete the last arena, you score one point for each second remaining on the clock.

The scoring is different on the Free level: you score one for the first, two for the second, etc., up to five, then five points per scoring item afterwards. The skateboard only remains "charged up" like this for a short time if you don't score points, and if it loses its charge, you go back to scoring 1, 2, etc. again. There are also traffic cones in this arena, and if you hit them you lose a point and your skateboard loses its charge, so the overall loss from hitting a single traffic cone is up to eleven points (1+2+3+4 instead of 5+5+5+5 for the next four scoring opportunities).

Hints and tips

  • Speed is of the essence in this game, so avoid letting the board slow down too much.
  • Try to skate along rather than across lines of "light strips" as this scores points faster. The same applies to skimming the edges of the platforms and benches.
  • In the Free level, you can maximise your score by turning around and going to the far end of the arena, where there is a set of three rows of half-pipe segments that you can go back and forth along.
  • The Free level includes very long benches and platforms so you can practice skimming.
