Object of the game

Your Mii has decided to be like Philippe Petit and walk a rope strung between two buildings - and without a net! You must help him to get across the rope without falling to his doom.

Equipment required

This game requires:

  • The Wii Balance Board

MET

Tightrope Walk has a MET of 2, meaning that it is a light intensity activity.

Time

All levels of this game takes up to two minutes. You can shorten this time by getting across the rope or dying.

Levels

There are three levels of Tightrope Walk.

Each of the tightrope walks takes place on the same rope between the same two buildings. At each level, however, the tightrope walker faces different hazards.

Beginner

  • There is only one biting machine (see Biting machines in the Hazards section below).

Advanced

  • There are three biting machines (see Biting machines in the Hazards section below).
  • Bird feathers obscure your view of your Mii (see (see Obscured view in the Hazards section below)

Super advanced

  • There are three biting machines (see Biting machines in the Hazards section below).
  • Wind tries to blow you off the rope (see Wind in the Hazards section below).

How to play the game

There are two movements you need for playing this game: walking and jumping.

Walking

  • To walk across the rope, stand on the Wii Balance Board and step in place.
  • You must keep your weight evenly distributed on the Wii Balance Board or else your Mii will lean over on one side or the other (see Leaningin the Hazards below).

Jumping

  • To jump, bend your knees and then quickly straighten them, evenly distributing your weight on both your legs.
  • Do not jump on the Wii Balance Board.
  • The biting machine hazard (see Biting machines in the Hazards section below) can only be traversed by jumping over it.

Hazards

Leaning

  • If lean to one side or the other, it slows down your pace, and thus, slows down the time it takes you to walk the rope.
  • Leaning also puts you in danger of falling off the rope (see Falling off the rope in the Hazards below).
  • When you lean, the game plays 'danger' music to remind you of the peril you are in.

Falling off the rope

  • Falling off the rope is always fatal. If you die, the game ends.
  • If you lean too far to one side or the other, you can lose your foothold on the rope and fall off.
  • In the Super Advanced level, if you do not shift your weight to fight against the wind, the wind will blow you off the rope (see Wind in the Hazards section below).

Making an unbalanced jump

  • If you are unbalanced when you jump, you will jump to the side instead of over the biting machine.
  • If you make an unbalanced jump, you will jump off the rope to one side, killing you and ending the game.

Biting machines

  • Biting Machines sit on the rope, waiting for you to approach. When you get close enough, they start towards you.
  • The only way to get over a biting machine to continue your walk is to jump (see Jumping above).
  • If you fail to jump in time, the biting machine will get you and you will die, ending the game.
  • If you mistime your jump so that you jump too soon and land on the biting machine, you will die and the game ends.
  • If you are not balanced when you jump, you will jump off the rope and thus will die, ending the game (see Making an unbalanced jump above).

Obscured view

  • This hazard only occurs at the Advanced level.
  • Birds feathers obscure the view you have of your Mii, making it hard to keep your balance.

Wind

  • This hazard only occurs at the Super Advanced level.
  • Wind, from one side or the other, tries to blow you off the rope.
  • The wind makes it difficult to keep your balance and slows down your walk.
  • The wind can shift suddenly from one side to the other.

Scoring

  • This game is played against the clock. The quicker you make your walk, the better your score.
  • Your score is the time it took you to get from one side of the rope to the other or the distance you covered before you died.

Hints and tips

  • Keep your legs apart when you walk. This helps you to distribute your weight evenly, which is particularly important in the Super Advanced level.
  • Extend your arms out horizontally to help you keep your balance.
  • Keep your back straight.

Silliness

  • At the start, there are no other Miis on your building to see you off. Not even a hug goodbye if you don't make it.
  • The Miis on the building on the other side are not dressed in their usual jogging clothes. They are in comfortable, lounge about clothes. It seems that they want to be comfy as they watch you fall. Miis can be so cruel.
  • The building on which you start is grey and grim, but the building on the other side is bright and happy. Is this a metaphor for something?
  • This game is one of the few where the 3D "geometry" is different when the Wii is set to different languages - the wording above the start and finish is part of the geometry of the scene, and it varies according to the language.
