What is this?
This is a yoga position for the back.
Benefits
Downward Facing Dog:
- Stretches the back.
- Tones the whole body.
- Makes a good part of a cool-down stretch routine.
Equipment required
This exercise requires:
- The Wii Balance Board
A mat or soft surface is recommended.
MET
Downward Facing Dog has a MET of 2, meaning that it is a light intensity activity.
Time
This exercise takes two minutes.
Levels
There is only one level of Downward Facing Dog.
How to do it
At all times, follow the movements of your trainer.
Initial Position
- Kneel on the floor with the Wii Balance Board in front of you.
- Put your hands on your thighs.
Set-up
- Placing your hands on the Wii Balance Board, go down on all fours.
- Make sure that your palms are flat against the board.
The position
- While breathing in, straighten your legs and move them back.
- Straighten your arms, keeping your palms on the Wii Balance Board.
- Keeping your back straight, raise your lower body so that forms an upside-down 'V'.
- Your head should be facing the floor.
Holding the Position
- Keep your palms on the Wii Balance Board.
- Breathe in and out, keeping your breath steady.
- Concentrate on your balance so that you keep the red bar in the blue zone.
Unwinding
- Keeping your back straight, lower your body.
- Bend your knees and elbows and move your legs in so that you are on all fours.
- Lift your hands off the Wii Balance Board and straighten your body so that you are kneeling.
- Place your hands on your thighs.
Repetitions
- There is only one repetition of this exercise.
Scoring
You are awarded points based on how well you kept the red bar in the blue zone.
Problems
- Do not let your back sag during this exercise as you might strain it.
- If you are having trouble keeping your balance, you may have moved your legs too far back or are keeping your feet or palms too close together.
